The digital world has created a dangerous association: the more visual elements a solution shows, the more sophisticated it seems. Animations, videos, effects, gradients, elaborate charts and interfaces packed with information can impress at first glance. But visual sophistication isn't the same as efficiency.
A website or dashboard doesn't exist to show off how many features a developer or designer can fit on a screen. It exists to fulfil a function. For a website, that function might be presenting a business, building trust, capturing a contact or leading the visitor to an action. For a dashboard, it's turning data into information people can actually understand to support decisions.
When visual elements start competing with that function, design stops being an asset and becomes an obstacle.
The problem isn't having a lot. It's having what isn't necessary.
"Less is more" tends to be treated as a purely aesthetic idea. In a digital context, though, the principle runs much deeper.
It doesn't mean building empty interfaces, cutting important features, or making everything look simple as a style choice. It means making conscious decisions about what deserves to be there — and, above all, about what can be removed.
Every element in an interface has a cost. It might be a cost in processing, in load time, in maintenance, or simply in human attention.
An animation can make an experience more pleasant. A video can explain a product better than text. A complex chart can capture an important relationship between variables. The problem starts when these resources are used because they "look nice," not because they serve a purpose.
The right question isn't "can we add this?" It's:
"Does this help the user reach their goal?"
If the answer is no, that element probably shouldn't be there.
In web development, speed is part of the experience
A website can have flawless visual design and still deliver a poor experience.
Heavy images, excessive JavaScript, unoptimized video, unnecessary animations and third-party resources can significantly increase load time. And speed isn't just a technical matter.
Users don't think in terms of "server response time," "render-blocking JavaScript" or "Core Web Vitals." They simply notice that the site is taking too long.
And once that happens, attention starts to fade.
That's why performance needs to be considered from the start of development, not patched on afterwards. Image optimization, properly loaded resources, caching, efficient code and a well-planned architecture are all part of building a good digital experience.
Core Web Vitals exist precisely to measure important aspects of that experience, such as loading, responsiveness and visual stability.
This also affects SEO. A website needs to be understood by search engines, but before that, it needs to work well for real people.
A fast website isn't just technically better. It reduces the friction between a visitor and the action we want them to take.
A website doesn't need to impress. It needs to work.
There's an important difference between visual impact and visual excess.
A good homepage can be visually striking using very few elements: solid typography, a clear hierarchy, relevant images, adequate spacing, and a well-placed call to action.
The goal isn't to make the visitor think:
"What an impressive amount of effects!"
The goal is for them to quickly understand:
Who is this company? What do they offer? Why should I trust them? What should I do now?
When those answers are clear, the design is doing its job.
This doesn't mean websites should all be visually plain or identical. Quite the opposite. A well-built visual identity can be sophisticated, elegant and memorable without depending on an excess of elements.
Sophistication lives in the decisions, not in the quantity of resources.
In dashboards, visual excess can hide what actually matters
The same principle applies to data analysis.
A dashboard isn't a collection of charts. It's a decision-making tool.
Picture a manager opening a panel and finding fifteen charts, eight different colors, several indicators all the same size, and a series of numbers with no hierarchy.
There's plenty of information, but very little guidance.
The problem isn't the amount of data available. It's the absence of a structure that tells the user where to look, what it means, and what needs attention.
This is where the concept of data storytelling comes in.
A good dashboard guides the eye. It builds a visual hierarchy and turns scattered data into an understandable narrative.
First, it sets the context. Then, it highlights the most important indicators. Then, it lets the user dig into causes or relevant details.
Users shouldn't have to "dig" for the most important information.
If everything demands attention, nothing does.
Why 3D charts usually don't help
Three-dimensional charts are a classic example of appearance competing with precision.
In a 3D visualization, elements can look bigger or smaller depending on perspective, depth and position. That makes it harder to compare values.
For analysis, the priority should be letting users compare information quickly and with minimal cognitive effort.
A simple bar chart can do that better than a visually impressive three-dimensional rendering.
The question isn't which chart looks more sophisticated.
It's which chart lets you understand the data more accurately.
Color should guide, not decorate
Another common problem is the excessive use of color.
A palette can be visually pleasing and, at the same time, hurt data interpretation.
If every indicator has a different color, users quickly lose track of what actually deserves attention.
A more effective approach is using neutral colors for context and reserving accent colors for situations that genuinely require intervention.
Take a financial dashboard as an example.
If every indicator is red, red stops meaning "pay attention."
But if most of the interface is neutral and a single indicator stands out because it crossed a critical target, the user immediately knows where to look.
Color stops being decoration and becomes information.
The Data-Ink Ratio
This principle connects directly to the data-ink ratio, a concept associated with Edward Tufte's work.
The core idea is simple: in a data visualization, we should maximize the proportion of visual elements that actually represent information, and reduce whatever just takes up space or adds noise.
That means questioning elements like unnecessary borders, excessive shadows, decorative backgrounds, three-dimensional effects, redundant labels, colors with no function, and graphic elements that add no information.
This isn't about removing everything.
It's about making sure that whatever remains has a reason to be there.
Fewer elements. More intent.
There's a fundamental difference between minimalism and efficiency.
Minimalism can be an aesthetic choice.
Efficiency is a functional one.
A dashboard can have dozens of elements and still be efficient, as long as each one serves a clear purpose. In the same way, a website can use images, videos, animations and interactive elements without necessarily being excessive.
The problem starts when a feature exists without a purpose.
So, before adding any element, it's worth asking three questions:
Is this necessary?
Does this make understanding or action easier?
Does the benefit justify the cost in processing, attention and maintenance?
If there's no good answer, it's probably better to remove it.
The same principle, two different fields
Web development and data analysis seem like very different disciplines.
One works with code, interfaces, servers and browsers. The other works with data, metrics, models and visualizations.
But both face the same challenge:
how do you communicate something complex in a simple, efficient way?
On a website, we want to turn visitors into people who understand, trust and act.
On a dashboard, we want to turn data into information someone can understand, interpret and use to decide.
In both cases, excess adds friction.
That's why I believe good digital work shouldn't be judged by how many resources it uses, but by how efficiently those resources serve their purpose.
Effective design is design with purpose
There's a line often attributed to the French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:
"Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
That idea sums up the principle well.
An excellent website isn't necessarily the one with the most effects.
An excellent dashboard isn't the one with the most charts.
A professional digital solution is one where every choice has a reason.
