Websites for lawyers and law firms
A law firm website that builds authority without breaking ethics.
A lawyer's client arrives with a serious problem and a lot of doubt. For foreign clients in Portugal, who often do not speak Portuguese, the website is the first test: it must show knowledge, sobriety and a simple way to the first conversation.
What holds back law firms online
Three problems I see every week.
Referrals do not scale.
Most firms live on word of mouth. It works, until the month it does not. Someone searching "English-speaking lawyer Lisbon" or "property lawyer Algarve" today does not reach you.
The site looks like every other firm.
Scales of justice, gavel, stock library photo and generic text about "excellence". Visitors cannot tell what you are good at or why they should choose you.
Fear of the Bar Association.
Legal marketing sits close to ethics rules, especially on soliciting clients. Not sure where the line is, many lawyers prefer to have no website and leave the space to those who do.
What your website will have
Built for your sector, not adapted from a template.
On top of what every project includes — technical SEO, speed, lead tracking and a review of your copy — the website includes what makes a difference in your sector:
One page per practice area
Property, immigration, family, business, tax: each area with its own page and plain language a client who is not a lawyer understands, in English and Portuguese.
Informative legal content
Articles that answer what people search ("how do I buy a house in Portugal", "how does the Golden Visa work"). It is content marketing, and it brings the most qualified enquiries.
Lawyer profiles
Training, bar membership number, languages, publications and areas of each partner. Authority is shown with facts, not adjectives.
Discreet contact
Form and WhatsApp with a sober tone, no "promotion" and no pressure. The client describes the matter at their own pace.
Sober, distinctive look
An elegant identity without scales-and-gavel clichés, which sets the firm apart from its competitors.
Local SEO by area
Pages optimised for "lawyer for [area] in [city]", the exact search of someone who needs you.
Within the Bar Association's ethics rules
Lawyers in Portugal are bound by the Estatuto da Ordem dos Advogados (Lei 145/2015) and the ethics code. Whatever the format, the core duties apply: professional secrecy, truthful and non-misleading information, and no soliciting of clients. I build the site as informative and sober: practice areas, profiles and useful content, with no promise of results and no disclosure of clients or confidential cases. When I review your copy, I flag anything that may raise an ethical question. Final responsibility lies with the lawyer.

Questions from people in the trade
Questions about websites for law firms
Can a lawyer have a website and do marketing?
Yes. Portuguese lawyers can inform the public about their services, including through websites and social media, as long as the information is truthful and not misleading and respects professional secrecy and the ban on soliciting clients. I build the site to stay on the right side of that line.
Does the site need to be in English?
If you serve foreign clients, yes. Most of them search in English and will not contact a firm whose site they cannot read. I build both languages as separate pages, so each ranks in its own language.
Do I need to write articles?
It is not compulsory, but it brings the most enquiries over time. You can write the drafts and I review and optimise them for Google, or publish as often as you can. The blog is already included in the Professional plan.
Can I mention cases I have won?
Disclosing specific cases and clients is restricted by professional secrecy. The site conveys authority in other ways: training, practice areas, publications and useful content.
Does the site work for a solo lawyer?
Very well. For someone working alone, the website is what puts you on equal footing with bigger firms in the client's first impression.
