How to Use Google Analytics 4 to Transform Your Business

Google Analytics 4 interface showing a traffic acquisition report with user and session metrics

Invested in a professional website but do not know whether people are visiting? Or you know there is traffic, but cannot tell where it comes from or what visitors do once they arrive? That information gap is exactly what Google Analytics 4 solves, and it is free.

This guide covers the essentials: what GA4 is, what to measure, how to read the data and how to turn the numbers into concrete decisions.

What Google Analytics 4 Is

GA4 is the current version of Google Analytics (Universal Analytics was shut down in 2023). It is a free tool that, once installed on your site, records everything that happens: who visits, where they come from, what they do on each page and when they leave.

Installation is simple: you create an account at analytics.google.com, generate a small piece of JavaScript and add it to the site. From that moment, GA4 starts collecting data automatically.

One note for sites in Portugal and the EU: tracking cookies need the visitor's consent under the GDPR, so the site should have a cookie banner that only loads analytics after the visitor accepts.

Essential Metrics to Start With

GA4 has hundreds of metrics. These are the ones that matter for most small businesses:

  • Active users: the number of unique people who visited the site in a period
  • Sessions: the total number of visits (one user can generate several sessions)
  • Engagement rate: the percentage of sessions with meaningful interaction (the inverse of the classic bounce rate). Target: above 55%.
  • Most visited pages: which content attracts the most attention
  • Traffic sources: organic (Google), direct (typed URL), social (LinkedIn, Instagram), referral (other sites), paid (Google Ads)
  • Geographic location: where visitors come from

How to Read the Data

The most common GA4 mistake is looking at absolute numbers without context. 500 visits in a month: is that a lot or a little? It depends on the previous month, your sector, the size of the market and what you did in terms of marketing.

What matters is the trend and the proportions:

  • Is organic traffic growing month on month? Then SEO is working.
  • Is the engagement rate low on one specific page? The content is not matching expectations.
  • Does one channel bring lots of traffic but little engagement? It may be low-quality traffic.

5 Valuable Insights You Can Get Straight Away

1. Which Channel Brings the Most Qualified Traffic

Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. Compare the engagement rate by channel. Organic is usually higher quality; social may bring volume but lower buying intent.

2. Which Pages Are Losing Visitors

Reports, Engagement, Pages and screens. Sort by exit rate. Pages with a high exit rate may have mismatched content or no call to action.

3. Which Devices Your Customers Use

Reports, Tech, Overview. If 70% of traffic is mobile, the site needs to be optimised for phones first.

4. Seasonality of Your Traffic

Compare the same months across different years. Spotting seasonality lets you plan campaigns and investment more intelligently.

5. Cities and Countries

Reports, Demographics, Demographic details. Knowing where visitors come from helps you decide which markets to invest in and which languages and currencies to prioritise.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only looking at total sessions without analysing quality or trend
  • Not filtering internal traffic: your own visits to the site distort the data
  • Not setting up conversions: without defining what a valuable action is (a form submission, a WhatsApp click), you cannot measure what really matters
  • Ignoring the Acquisition report: it holds the most strategic information

Turning Data Into Decisions

GA4 only creates value when the data informs concrete action:

  • If organic is the highest-quality channel but only 10% of traffic, invest in SEO
  • If 70% of traffic is mobile but mobile engagement is low, redesign mobile first
  • If a specific service page has a high exit rate, improve the content and add a call to action
