How Much Does a Professional Website Cost in Portugal in 2026?
One of the most common questions when planning a website: "How much should I expect to pay?" The range is genuinely wide, from €0 (DIY on Wix) to €50,000+ (a large agency or an enterprise project). This guide gives you realistic numbers for Portugal in 2026, with honest explanations of what you get at each price point.
The Price Spectrum
| Type | Price Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| DIY (Wix, Squarespace) | €0 + €15–30/month subscription | Personal projects, testing an idea |
| WordPress template (freelancer) | €400–900 | Small businesses, service providers |
| Custom WordPress site | €800–2,500 | SMEs needing specific functionality |
| Custom HTML/CSS/PHP site | €1,200–4,000 | Businesses prioritising performance and control |
| Agency (design + development) | €3,000–15,000+ | Larger projects with branding needs |
| Enterprise / bespoke web app | €15,000+ | Custom platform, complex integrations |
DIY Platforms: When They Make Sense (and When They Do Not)
Wix, Squarespace and Webflow have improved significantly. For a personal portfolio or a very early-stage business testing a concept, they can be a reasonable starting point.
The limits become obvious when the business grows: limited SEO control, no ability to modify the code, dependency on the platform's pricing and difficulty migrating away when you outgrow it. The monthly subscription also adds up: €25 a month over 4 years is €1,200, without owning anything.
WordPress Template: The Sweet Spot for Many Small Businesses
A professionally installed and configured WordPress site based on a premium theme (the €400–900 range from a freelancer) typically gives you:
- Professional design with a template built for your type of business
- A mobile-responsive layout
- Basic SEO configuration (meta tags, sitemap, Search Console setup)
- A contact form with email notifications
- A WhatsApp button
- The ability to update content yourself after handover
What it typically does not include: custom design, significant structural changes to the template, or complex integrations (booking systems, payment gateways, membership areas). If you want to weigh this route properly, read premium WordPress templates vs free themes.
Custom WordPress: More Flexibility, More Cost
Custom WordPress development means building the site's design to a specification rather than adapting a template. The layout, colours, sections and interactions are designed specifically for the business. Cost ranges from €800 to €2,500 for a freelancer, more for agencies.
The benefit: a site that looks and works exactly as needed, not as the template allows. The trade-off: a higher initial cost and, if done with a page builder such as Elementor, potential performance overhead.
Custom HTML/CSS/PHP: Maximum Performance and Control
Sites built from scratch without WordPress or a CMS are leaner, faster and more secure by default: there is no plugin ecosystem to maintain and no WordPress core to update. Lighthouse performance scores of 95+ are achievable and maintainable.
The trade-off: updating content requires editing code or having a developer do it. This suits businesses whose content changes rarely and where performance is a priority. The comparison is covered in more depth in WordPress vs custom website.

Ongoing Costs to Budget For
The one-time development cost is only part of the picture. Typical ongoing annual costs for a business website in Portugal:
- Domain: €10–20/year (a .pt domain is €12–15; a .com is €10–12)
- Hosting: €60–180/year (shared hosting to managed VPS)
- SSL certificate: €0 (Let's Encrypt, included in most modern hosting) to €80/year (commercial certificate)
- Maintenance (WordPress sites): €20–80/month on the market for updates, backups and security monitoring
- Content updates: €50–200 per update if you do not update it yourself
For maintenance, my website care plans cost € 19 a month (Essential) and € 49 a month (Growth), so you do not need to budget at the top of that range.
Questions to Ask Before Hiring
When evaluating web development proposals, ask:
- Will I be able to update text and images myself, or do I need to pay for every change?
- What is included in the post-launch support period?
- Who handles hosting and the domain, and what happens if I want to move providers?
- What is the Lighthouse performance score of your recent projects?
- Is SEO configuration included or an add-on?
